Frédéric CARVALHO (EN)

Research Theme:

My project is focused on the study of the pathophysiology of chronic pain, mainly abdominal pain associated with IBS or IBD during periods of remission, in order to determine the mechanisms of chronicization of pain, with a particular focus on the influence of metabolites and interventional approaches in preclinical models. It lies at the interface between microbiology and neuroscience. This project is divided into two approaches: (1) Study the impact of the microbiota and its metabolites on chronic abdominal pain and “Well-being” by favoring the AhR/IL-22 pathway; (2) Evaluate the neuromodulatory power of bacteria with probiotic potential such as F. prausnitzii or P. distasonis.

Responsibilities:

Since 2013, I have directed or co-directed 4 M1, 8 M2 and 7 doctoral students, including 2 in progress.

  • 10/12-12/2015: Co-supervision of L. BOUDIEU’s thesis, funded by a MENRT scholarship. Dr Boudieu is currently Clinical Research Associate at Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital.
  • 10/14-06/2017: Co-supervision of thesis by A. LASHERMES, funded by a MENRT grant. Dr Lashermes is currently R&D Project Manager at Novobiome.
  • 11/15-12/2018: Thesis director of Mr. DEFAYE, funded by a grant from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (“Thematic” funding Emerging”). Dr Defaye is currently carrying out a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary (Canada) with Professor Christophe ALTIER.
  • 11/18-04/2022: Thesis director of Mr. MEYNIER, funded by a scholarship Region/FEDER (CPER “Nex-N-Mob” funding). Dr Meynier is currently carrying out a post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr Emmanuel DEVAL, Institute of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology (IPMC)/Université Côte d’Azur (Nice).
  • 01/19-12/2022: Thesis director of S. GERVASON), with private funding (Greencell). Dr Gervason currently holds the position of R&D Project Manager at Biose Industrie. His thesis was rewarded with the Grand Prix for young researchers from the city of Clermont-Ferrand in 2023.
  • Since 10/2021: Thesis director of V. DAUGEY, funded by a MENRT scholarship.
  • Since 10/2023: Thesis director of N. VERDUIJN, funded by an FRM scholarship.

Recent article selections:

During my career, I have produced 40 articles (38 originals and 2 reviews) for a total of 4790 citations and an H-index of 23. Among these 40 publications, 16 are in PDC (6 as first author, 10 as last or co-last author and 11 as corresponding author). Publications are available on Web of Science and ORCID (#0000-0003-1592-2369). I was also an inventor in filing two patents. In addition, I have given 11 oral communications at international conferences (including 3 by invitation), as well as 15 communications displayed in the form of posters at international conferences.
